Who We Are:

We are a design and build firm based in Portsmouth, Rhode Island that creates pretty cool high-end landscapes throughout coastal New England. From site planning to finished stonework and plantings, we design, build, and maintain spaces that feel timeless, intentional, and uniquely tailored to each property.

Our design team leads the creative process from first sketch to final walkthrough, developing award-winning landscapes that blend artistry, craftsmanship, and functionality.

Your Role:

As a Landscape Architect at Hanley, you’ll collaborate directly with homeowners to design and estimate landscapes that balance aesthetics, functionality, and long-term value. You’ll be the point of contact for your clients from concept to completion — guiding projects through design development, pricing, and construction.

This is a position for a designer who loves both the creative and technical sides of landscape architecture. You’ll work on high-end residential properties across coastal Rhode Island and southern New England, bringing bold ideas and precise detailing to life with full support from our construction and horticultural teams.

Your Day & Team Looks Like:

You’ll start most mornings at our Portsmouth office or out on-site meeting with clients. From there, your day might include sketching concepts, creating 3D models, preparing estimates, or collaborating with our field teams to ensure your vision is built exactly as designed.

We equip our design staff with everything needed to do their best work — including a high-powered laptop or desktop, iPad Pro, iPhone, and access to advanced design software like Vectorworks, Structure Studios, Lumion, and SketchUp. You’ll have creative freedom in how you design, because we know every designer works differently.

Responsibilities Include:

• Designing, drafting, and rendering landscape plans using the software of your choice

• Supervising or reviewing drafting and visualization work completed by others

• Preparing design proposals, construction documents, and cost estimates

• Creating clear, professional presentations for clients

• Selling design and construction projects through strong communication and trust

• Overseeing projects through all stages of design and construction

• Ensuring designs are functional, beautiful, and aligned with Hanley’s brand of timeless design

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture from an accredited program

• Ability to obtain or hold licensure in the state of Rhode Island

• 3+ years of experience in high-end residential landscape design

• Strong design and presentation skills, with an elevated aesthetic sense

• Proficiency in at least one primary design platform (Vectorworks, Structure Studios, or AutoCAD) and rendering software (Lumion or equivalent)

• Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and cost estimating

• Excellent communication and client management skills

• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
