Who are our fine gardeners?

Our fine gardening team is made up of horticulturists, gardeners, and individuals with educational backgrounds in plant science, horticulture, environmental science, landscape architecture, or related fields. Many team members have hands-on experience working in high-detail gardens and understanding how plants behave over time, not just how they look when first installed.

We also work with landscape architecture and horticulture interns from UMass & URI who are looking to deepen their understanding of planting design, garden management, and the long-term care of landscapes in the field. Meet the leadership team on fine gardens on our team page.

What does fine gardening team offer?

Fine gardening is a more detailed, hands-on level of landscape care focused on the health, appearance, and long-term development of planted spaces. Unlike standard landscape maintenance, fine gardening is centered around the plants themselves. It includes tasks like detailed weeding, deadheading, pruning, perennial care, seasonal rotations, soil improvement, monitoring plant health, caring for annuals and containers, edible gardens, and keeping gardens looking intentional throughout the season.

Why Hanley?

Fine gardening at Hanley  is approached with the same level of care and attention as our design and construction work. The gardens we maintain are often gardens we designed and built ourselves, which gives our team a deep understanding of the intent behind the planting plan, how the space is meant to evolve, and what each plant needs to thrive long term.

Our team focuses on detailed, hands-on care rather than simply “maintaining” a property. We pay attention to timing, plant health, seasonal appearance, texture, color balance, and how the garden changes throughout the year. From deadheading and pruning to monitoring irrigation, managing annuals, edible gardens, containers, and seasonal enhancements, the goal is to keep the landscape feeling refined, healthy, and intentional at all times.

Because Hanley is a design-build firm, there is no disconnect between the people designing the landscape and the people caring for it afterward. Our horticulture team works closely with our designers and construction staff, allowing us to make thoughtful adjustments, identify issues early, and continue improving the landscape over time rather than simply preserving it.
